In Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest , an admirable teenage girl, Miranda, has been stranded on an island for most of her life with her bitter father. She utters these iconic words when she discovers several new people for the first time. “O wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in’t!” (Act 5, Scene 1, 181-184) In reality, the quote is probably meant to be ironic or display Miranda’s naïveté (many of the people she meets are not goodly at all!). Still, Shakespeare’s line is often used now when we embark on a new challenge or adventure in life. For us, COVID-19 is changing everything with many ungoodly things, but a world of possibility awaits. We go forth into this brave new world as the visible community of Jesus, showing the world what it means to be the world that God intended in creation. Well, that was fast. And just like that, everything changed. We have a whole new reality because of this novel coronavirus. And we’re greatly concerned about the people in the path or in the wake of COVID-19 and the effect it’s having on so many other areas of life. Salem is closed and all in-person events, including in-person worship, are canceled. Our denomination’s General Conference that may have split the church has been postponed from May until next year. Now we know we won’t even be able to gather in-person for Easter Sunday. Many of us are hunkered down in our homes. We’re practicing physical distancing. Some of us are still working. Some of us are going a bit stir-crazy, and some of us are anxious, depressed, uncertain, lonely. How do we move forward with all of this change? We always share that Salem's mission, the reason we exist, is to make disciples of Jesus Christ who transform the world. But I wonder, are you a disciple of Jesus? Do you feel like you’re growing to be like Jesus? How would you respond? I started exercising at a gym last fall. The kickboxing and strength training have been fun and healthy for me. When I began, the instructors shared something that has stuck with me. They can teach me the moves and the routines, but I have to show up and actually do the work. Nothing changes unless I put forth the energy and work hard. I don’t grow if I don’t make these practices habits in my life. No matter how much my trainers like me, they can’t do the work for me. The same is true at Salem. We invite you to hear what God has done in Jesus Christ and live in the way of Jesus, being led by the Holy Spirit as a visible presence of the kingdom of God in the world. Each year, in assessing the state of Salem, we take a look at some benchmark statistics. As of the end of 2019 our membership now includes 204 professing adults. This includes 17 shut-in members and 75 inactive members. This is a big adjustment from the previous year but it’s much more accurate. We did a lot of work on our database and membership lists. This past year 3 members died, 1 was withdrawn, and we received 21 new members, including 8 confirmation students who professed their faith. That means we have received 151 new members since arriving at our current location a little more than nine years ago! We also have 78 baptized infants and children—an increase! Adding the children to the adults means we have 374  total baptized members.  Additionally, we have 98 active non-members. That means we have 472 people who are a part of Salem. The Leadership Board intentionally sets Salem’s direction each year. They shared our goals for 2020 with the annual Church Conference this fall who subsequently approved them. Therefore, this is what we’d like to accomplish next year as a congregation. First, we want to improve the Discipleship Pathway to engage people more to worship, connect, serve, and share their resources and faith. Specifically, we will intentionally engage persons more fully in service both within and beyond the congregation. Second, we want to create and implement a deliberate plan for hospitality, serving as Christ's ambassadors to invite, welcome, and connect people into the life of the church. A church grows when the people of the congregation invite their friends and others within their sphere of influence. Nearly twenty years ago, there was an interview with David Yonggi Cho, founding pastor of the largest Protestant church in the world, Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea with 800,000 members. Pastor Cho encouraged churches to skip over the older idea of starting new churches with physical buildings and go directly to the next generation strategy of using the Internet to connect a decentralized network of groups and people. He even suggested that many new people watched worship over the Internet. This was almost twenty years ago. My wife, Joy, and I were in Korea about that time. We visited Yoido Full Gospel Church as well as Kwang Lim, the largest Methodist Church in the world with 85,000 members. We also heard them speak about the potential of using the Internet to connect people for church. Scripture counsels us to take heed of those who are good at what they do. Within the Book of Proverbs, there are “thirty sayings of the wise.” One of them urges, “Observe people who are good at their work—skilled workers are always in demand and admired” (23:29 The Message) . Shane Bishop is the Senior Pastor of Christ Church, a United Methodist congregation in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Christ Church was recognized as one of the 100 fastest growing churches in the United States for 2018. Their weekend worship attendance has increased from 200 to over 2,500 since Shane’s appointment in 1997 and has grown for twenty-two consecutive years. Shane was named A Distinguished Evangelist of the United Methodist Church in 2010 .
