New Church Possibilities

Salem owns 9.6 acres of land on Blairs Ferry Road. We have the opportunity to make that a base of operations for reaching out to new people.

In 2004 the Crosswinds United Methodist Church, a new church start, joined with Salem. Salem received many of the Crosswinds members as well as 9.6 acres of land on Blairs Ferry Road. Many prayers and dreams have occurred for the possibilities with this land.

Three years ago we made the decision to make 33rd Ave Salem’s new home. Choosing our new location, however, did not mean turning away from the Blairs Ferry Land. Many of us have remained very excited about the possibilities: it could be a multiple campus, a whole new congregation, or a retreat center, etc.

On Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00 pm, our District Superintendent, Rev. David Crow, will preside over a Church Conference. The Leadership Board is recommending to the congregation that we sell sell 1.8 acres on the north end of our land for missional reasons. The land is necessary for a road that will provide access for a planned housing development. This will allow for the creation of a large neighborhood right next to Salem’s property.

The developer is willing to pay $30,000 per acre for a total of $54,000. The Leadership Board is also recommending that we tithe that income to Imagine No Malaria. This would give us a $5,400 head start towards our goal of $20,000.

Furthermore, we have learned that the sprung building currently in use by the Center Point UMC is likely to be available about a year from now at a cost of about $40,000. It would cost us more than that to provide utilities, parking, and a foundation slab for the sprung building, but we would have nearly $50,000 towards the beginning of a new outreach to our neighbors there.

One of the healthiest things a congregation can do is start another congregation, reaching out to new people. It is so important that new churches are encouraged to do so within their first ten years. We have been praying and dreaming about the possibilities with the Blairs Ferry land. What a momentous time as God invites us to be a part of this awesome journey.

    UPDATE: The Church Conference at Salem on April 16 voted unanimously to sell the 1.8 acres of the land on Blairs Ferry, and the Leadership Board is carrying out that decision.

Church Under Water

I spoke to Pastor Linda Bibb this evening. She’s the outgoing pastor at Salem Church where I have been appointed effective July 1. Salem is just a couple of blocks from the Cedar River in downtown Cedar Rapids. She told me they were evacuated from the church building at 4:00 pm yesterday. The wonderful people of this congregation worked together sandbagging and moving as much as they could to the second and third floors. But the river was too much. Linda said the water is at least 8-10 feet deep at the church building. There is a car port over one of the entrances and the water is above that car port. So the water could be to the second floor now. This picture from the Cedar Rapids Gazette shows how high the water was earlier today at the Dairy Queen which is right across the street from Salem United Methodist Church. Tearing Down the Old Church Building

The week of September 4, 2012, the old Salem United Methodist Church building was torn down. It had been destroyed in the flood of 2008 and sold to the city in the "voluntary buyout" in early 2011. Much of the building was torn down when work began on the morning of Tuesday, September 4. At one point, most of the building was down except for the sanctuary and bell tower. The workers removed their equipment and took a break. In the stillness of the morning, the roof over the sanctuary collapsed on its own and brought the rest of the building down except for the bell tower and front facing. The bell tower finally came down on Friday, September 7. It was an emotional week for many of the Salem people and for many who were connected in other ways, such as through the Walk to Emmaus. Consecration on May 17

Come celebrate the Consecration of our new facility on Ascension Sunday, May 17. Bishop Julius Trimble, who oversees the Iowa Annual Conference, will join us to consecrate, preach, and celebrate Holy Communion. It is a joy and a privilege to have our bishop with us. Our District Superintendent, Rev. David Crow, will also be with us. Consecration sets apart a person, object, or place for the worship and service of God. On May 17 we will set apart our new place of worship as a holy space dedicated for the gathering of people to hear the Word of God, offer prayer and praise, and to celebrate the sacraments. While the church building is not the Church, it does stand as an image of the Church in the world. In the Orthodox tradition, consecration has roots in Baptism. It is the Baptism of the church building, so to speak. Just as a person is changed in baptism and becomes a new creation, the consecration changes an ordinary building into the house of God.
